We are honored to dedicate the 2012 Verde Valley Fair to
Dave Williams
for his many years of
volunteer service and support.
Thank you Dave for having such a “BIG” heart!!!!
2012 Verde Valley Fair “An Arizona Treasure”
Volunteers do not necessarily have the time;
they just have the heart…and few have more heart than this year’s Verde Valley
Fair honoree, Dave Williams. Dave is the gentle giant in the cowboy hat that
you’ll find working in the background of the livestock events. He is a rare
breed who hasn’t forgotten that real cowboys still open doors for ladies and
say, “yes ma’am.” Dave has been a steady fixture at the entry gate to the
arena, always offering a kind word as the nervous exhibitioners enter the show
ring.
Dave Williams was born in Prescott and moved to the Verde Valley when he was two years old. As a high school student, Dave was a member of the Mingus FFA where he gained a love of animals and learned the value of community. Dave encompasses the true meaning behind the FFA motto, “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.” After all, he has spent a lifetime serving others. At the age of 18, Dave enlisted in the U.S. Army where he spent 8 years serving his country. Upon returning home, he began a career as a sergeant with Yavapai County Sheriff’s Department serving and protecting his community for the past 17 years.
In keeping with his service ethic, Dave began volunteering at the Verde Valley Fair because he wanted to give back to the community that raised him. He served as the Chairperson for the Fair Association Livestock Committee from 2004-2008 and continues to volunteer to this day. Dave just shows up… “No phone call necessary”…to work the many livestock events that take place at the Fairgrounds. He helps run the scales during the livestock tagging and weigh-ins. He is always on hand to help set-up and tear down the Fair. Dave assists with the tractor driving, livestock shows and the auction. If it needs to be done, Dave is there to do it. For some, this type of volunteering is no vacation, but for Dave it’s a different story. He actually takes a week’s vacation from the Sheriff’s Office just to volunteer at the Fair…that’s just the kind of guy Dave is.
